Looking for a loving forever home
Sometimes, rehoming a dog isn’t about someone no longer wanting them. Sometimes, life changes so drastically that the people who love their dog have to make the heartbreaking decision to find a home where that dog can be happy again. Unfortunately, that is exactly what is happening with sweet Woodrow
Woodrow is a 10-year-old, 70-pound, silver Weimaraner who has been with his family since he was just eight weeks old. He has spent his entire life being loved, having a home with room to enjoy the outdoors, and being close to his people. But his world has changed.
Woodrow’s dad has been deployed overseas, and his family has been relocated to a small apartment. Gone is the big backyard he once enjoyed, and even harder for Woodrow is the absence of his dad and the companionship he was accustomed to. His family has watched him become increasingly unhappy and anxious, and it is absolutely breaking their hearts.
They love this boy. They don’t want to give him up. But they also cannot stand watching him struggle emotionally in an environment that simply isn’t meeting his needs anymore. They want Woodrow to have the life he deserves, even if that means making the incredibly difficult decision to let him go.
A LITTLE ABOUT WOODROW:
Woodrow is a purebred, neutered male Weimaraner, born June 18, 2016. He weighs approximately 70 pounds and has a beautiful silver coat and docked tail.
According to his owner, Woodrow is current on his rabies and distemper vaccinations, receives heartworm and flea/tick prevention, and has no known allergies or food sensitivities. He does receive trazodone as needed for situational anxiety, particularly when he must be left alone. He is not currently microchipped.
Woodrow is completely housebroken and will stand by the door or touch it with his paw when he needs to go outside. He knows sit, stay, down, and come, and he walks beautifully on a harness and leash.
He is also crate trained, although as he has gotten older, he has become less comfortable being confined. His owner reports that he does wonderfully loose in the house and is not destructive. At night, his favorite sleeping spot is at the end of the bed.
WHAT IS HIS PERSONALITY LIKE?
Woodrow is a sweet, affectionate, laid-back gentleman who absolutely adores his humans. He is the kind of Weimaraner who believes personal space is completely unnecessary. If you are sitting down, he wants to be sitting next to you. If he can be touching you, even better!
He is reportedly wonderful with children of all ages, men, women, and strangers. He has lived peacefully around other dogs and generally does well with both large and small breeds. His owner does mention that German Shepherds are not necessarily his favorite, so introductions should always be handled appropriately.
His compatibility with cats and farm animals is unknown.
Woodrow has never bitten anyone or shown aggression toward people, according to his owner. He may occasionally bark at someone wearing a hood and glasses, but he has no reported bite history.
He is a lower-energy senior who enjoys leisurely walks, relaxing outside, chewing on his bones, and spending time with his family. He doesn’t need constant entertainment or endless exercise. He just wants companionship, a comfortable place to relax, and preferably a yard where he can enjoy being outdoors.
And apparently, he has a particular weakness for unattended food, paper towels, and napkins, so you’ll want to keep those out of reach!
WHAT KIND OF HOME DOES WOODROW NEED?
This is the most important part of Woodrow’s story.
Woodrow struggles with significant separation anxiety. When left completely alone, he becomes distressed, paces, barks, and cries. His family currently uses situational anxiety medication when they know they must leave him.
Woodrow would do best with someone who is home most of the day, such as a retired person, someone who works from home, or a family with a compatible resident dog who can provide companionship.
His owner strongly believes he would benefit from having another dog in the home, along with a yard where he can spend time outdoors. However, another dog is not a guaranteed solution for separation anxiety, so his future family should be prepared to help him adjust and manage his anxiety patiently.
Woodrow is not a bad dog. He is not destructive, aggressive, or untrained. He is a senior Weimaraner who has experienced some enormous changes and is struggling with the loss of the life he knew.
At 10 years old, he deserves stability, companionship, and a family who understands that senior dogs can have a difficult time adjusting to major changes.
