Owner Surrender Process
We understand that deciding to rehome your Weimaraner is never easy, and we’re here to help guide you through the process with compassion and care. The first step is to contact our Intake Coordinator using the contact form below. Please provide detailed information about your Weimaraner, including age, sex, temperament, reason for surrender, and any known behavioral or medical issues. We will also need several clear photos — including full body shots — to help us begin the intake evaluation process.
Before proceeding, we encourage you to reach out to your dog’s breeder or previous rescue if applicable. Many reputable breeders prefer to have their dogs returned to them rather than placed through a rescue organization. We are unable to accept a dog when there is a contractual requirement to return it to a breeder/rescue.
Option 1: Courtesy Listing
We can offer a courtesy post on our website and social media platforms to help connect your Weimaraner directly with potential adopters.
• You would remain the main contact for all adoption inquiries.
• We will post your dog’s photos, bio, and contact information provided by you.
• Interested adopters will reach out directly, and you will be responsible for screening and selecting the adopter that best fits your dog’s needs.
• If we have approved adoption applications on file that match your dog, the Intake Coordinator can forward them to you upon request.
This option allows your dog to remain in your care until placement while still receiving exposure through our rescue network.
Option 2: Owner Surrender
If you prefer to surrender your Weimaraner directly into our rescue program, you will need to complete and sign an Owner Surrender Agreement. This document legally transfers ownership of your dog to Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue.
You will also be asked to provide your dog’s current veterinary records, including proof of vaccinations, heartworm test results, and at least one month of preventatives if possible. Surrendered dogs should be up-to-date on all vet care prior to surrender.
If TWR accepts you dog and the surrender agreement is completed, our Intake Coordinator will coordinate transport to an approved foster home. The foster home will provide care, evaluation, and love while we work to find the perfect forever home for your dog. All placement decisions will be made by the rescue’s foster and placement teams based on the best match for each dog’s needs and personality.
Important Notes
• Shelter Dogs: During times of high intake or limited foster space, priority is always given to Weimaraners at risk of euthanasia in shelters.
• Timeline: While we strive to move quickly, please understand that it can take 1–2 weeks or longer to locate an appropriate foster home and coordinate transport.
• Behavioral Considerations: Dogs with a bite history, severe behavioral issues, or extreme anxiety may require additional review before acceptance.
• TWR may not be able to accept all Owner Surrenders depending on various factors
Donations
Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue is a 100% volunteer-run organization funded entirely by donations. We often take in dogs that require significant medical care and rehabilitation. While there is no fee to surrender your dog, any voluntary donation you can provide will directly help cover your dog’s care and assist future rescues. Donations can be made through our website or by emailing tarheelweim@gmail.com for donation options.
Thank You
